Why it matters

Open book is not the same as easy.

You can bring your reference books into the Florida air conditioning contractor exam — and that is exactly why so many experienced techs underestimate it. The test is timed, the reference set is enormous, and a question you cannot answer from memory becomes a frantic page-flip you do not have time for.

This guide fixes that. You drill exam-style questions across all 10 content areas, read a plain-English explanation for every answer, and build the recall that turns a 10-minute lookup into a 30-second confirmation. The areas that decide the most pass/fail outcomes:

FAQ

Common questions

How many questions are on the Florida HVAC contractor exam?
The Class A air conditioning trade knowledge exam is built around 130 questions, delivered in two open-book sessions of 65 scored multiple-choice questions each. Every applicant must also pass a separate Business & Finance exam of about 120 questions. You need 70% to pass each.
Is the Florida air conditioning contractor exam open book?
Yes. Both the trade knowledge exam and the Business & Finance exam are open book. You may bring the approved reference books, so the real challenge is finding answers quickly under time pressure — which is why tabbing your books and practicing matters.
Who administers the Florida HVAC contractor exam?
The exams are developed and scored by Professional Testing, Inc. under contract with the Florida DBPR for the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). You register and apply to test directly with Professional Testing.
What is the difference between a Class A and Class B air conditioning license?
A Class A air conditioning contractor can install and service systems of any size with no capacity limit. A Class B contractor is limited to systems of 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU of heating or less per unit. Both take the same style of exam.
What score do I need to pass?
You need 70% on each exam — the trade knowledge exam and the Business & Finance exam. Aim to score 80%+ consistently on timed practice before you schedule the real thing.
How much experience do I need to qualify?
Florida generally requires at least four years of experience in the trade (combinations of approved education and experience can count) before you can sit for the air conditioning contractor exams. Verify the current requirements with the DBPR.
Are these the actual exam questions?
No. These are original practice questions written to cover the same 10 content areas the state tests, designed to build real understanding — not leaked exam items.
Do I have to pass the Business & Finance exam too?
Yes. Every air conditioning contractor applicant must pass the separate Business & Finance exam in addition to the trade knowledge exam. Our bank includes a Business, Law & Licensing area to help you prepare for that material.
